Comparison-Shopping

grocery list imageStep 1: Create a shopping list of twenty basic grocery items. For example: milk, eggs, sugar, salt, butter, dishwasher soap, bath soap, toilet paper, paper towels, etc.

Step 2: Use the Internet to visit three different grocery stores online to find the prices for the items on your list.

Step 3: Record the information in the chart on the Grocery Store Comparison Shopping file. List each of your grocery items in the first column. In the “Price at” columns, record the name of each of the stores you choose. Then record the brand and the price of each item in the chart. Be sure to compare “like” products and sizes at each store. For example: If you select a 12-pack of Pepsi as the soda to purchase at one store, compare 12-packs of Pepsi at all stores. Calculate how much you will spend at each store to buy all of the items.

Step 4: When you finish shopping, answer the following questions on the file under the chart:

  • Did one of your stores have lower prices overall than the other stores?
  • Do you think you could save money by purchasing generic or store brands?  Why or why not?
  • Would you save money by buying some items at one store and travelling to another store for other products? Why or why not?
  • Why did you select the brands of products that you did? Do you think advertising played a role in your choices? Why or why not?
  • Did you select items that were advertised as on sale?
