The tragic hero archetype dictates that the tragic hero must suffer until he dies. Some, like Macbeth, get off easy when they die prematurely: he had his head chopped off by his mortal enemy. Others, like Oedipus, must suffer until they die of natural causes. The length of the suffering is not the key issue; it is simply that the tragic flaw leads to a decision that results in the downfall and ultimate suffering of the characer. It may be difficult to see Okonkwo as a hero in any way; he is rough, abusive, and judgemental. However, as you watch his society and beloved way of life fall apart, you feel a desire to see him overcome all of the odds stacked against him. Remember though, he is a tragic hero.
