Lord of the Flies, Chapter Four

Mask

Journal IconAll people wear masks, although the extent to which they are worn differs from person to person. The same is true in literature. Some characters will wear many masks, while others will wear very few. As you continue to read Lord of the Flies, you will find that the boys wear literal masks to accomplish a goal together. Take a moment and think about the many masks you have worn in your life. Why did you wear these masks? Did you realize that you were wearing the mask? Were you shielding something or showing off?  In your journal create an entry and follow the instructions below:

  1. Create a table with two columns.
  2. In the first column, write down five qualities that you feel define you.
  3. In the second column, write down a word meaning the exact opposite of the word in the first column (even if it is untrue).
  4. Combine a word from the first column with one from the second column to make a statement. For example; I am strong; I am also vulnerable.
  5. Create the rest of your statements like the first example.
  6. Choose one of the statements and think of a time in your life that demonstrates this is true. In your journal, write a brief paragraph explaining why this statement is true.
