Medieval romances provided tales of adventure in which good triumphed over evil and knights behaved in accordance with the code of chivalry. Because of the instability of the Medieval Period, romances were popular because they provided guidelines for honorable behavior and reinforced the structure of feudalism. The most prevalent medieval romances involved the legend of King Arthur and the cast of characters that surrounded him. Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is an ideal example of a medieval romance, as it depicts a story of honor interwoven with a tale of adventure.
