Medieval Romances

The Code of Chivalry

During the Medieval Period, chivalry was a code by which all knights were expected to behave. It guided their social, moral, and romantic behavior. Some of the ideals were:

  • To serve God and the Church;
  • To serve the King and their lords and ladies;
  • To protect the weak and those in need of assistance;
  • To live by standards of honor, fairness, and truth;
  • To be charitable;
  • To protect and respect women, widows, and orphans; and
  • To guard other knights in need.

You already know that the Medieval Period was a turbulent time in British history. Why would chivalry, as well as romance stories that supported chivalry, be important to the people of Britain? How might those in power have used chivalry to their advantage? How would it have protected those in need?
