Muscular strength is the amount of force a muscle can exert in a single maximal effort. Strong muscles are important for your overall health.  With greater muscular strength, you can be more efficient in completing everyday tasks, such as climbing stairs, carrying your textbooks, walking to school, or doing yard work.  Stronger abdominal muscles help keep your skeleton in proper alignment, which prevents back and leg pain and provides the support necessary for good posture.  Below are some of the benefits that muscular strength can offer you.

  • Increases metabolism
  • Reduces risk of osteoporosis
  • Reduces risk of high blood pressure
  • Reduces cholesterol (helps increase your HDL, which is the good cholesterol)
  • Enhances posture
  • Increases caloric expenditure at rest and during physical activity, which means you burn more calories at rest and during physical activity
  • Decreases back pain

The Importance of Muscular Strength and Endurance

girl weight liftingMuscular endurance is the ability to perform physical activities over a period of time without becoming fatigued. Some everyday activities you may do that require muscular endurance include walking to and from school, climbing stairs, and carrying a basket full of groceries throughout the grocery store. Increasing your muscular endurance helps you perform these everyday tasks easily.

Muscular strength and endurance are different; however, both are vital to your overall level of fitness. Just think how your life would be different if you had a lot of muscular strength and no muscular endurance. You would be able to lift really heavy objects just one time, and then your muscles would be too tired to lift the object again or hold it for a long amount of time because you have no muscle endurance. If you had no muscular strength and a lot of muscular endurance, you would be able to do some activities, such as walking, for a long time; however, it would be difficult because your muscles would be too weak to hold your own body weight. Muscular strength and endurance, collectively, help you perform daily tasks easily.
