Sportsmanship and Respect

Referee giving a red cardIn the game of soccer, player discipline is managed by a color-coded card system. The cards signal a warning or removal of a player who violates the rules. A yellow card, for example, signals caution. Any soccer player who receives two yellow cards in one match is removed from the remainder of the game. For more serious infractions, there is a red card. A red card results in the removal of a player from the match. Red card infractions can result in player suspensions.

Recently, some soccer leagues around the world have introduced the green card to promote good sportsmanship and fair play. Players can receive a green card for helping an opponent off the ground, or helping the referee make the correct decision on a throw-in, goal kick, or corner kick. Players can even receive a green card for not receiving any yellow or red cards during the match. All players receiving green cards are acknowledged at the end of the match. Do you think the green card will encourage players to demonstrate good sportsmanship?
