Nervous and Endocrine Systems
In the warm up for this topic, you thought back to a time when you experienced a scare, a threat, or a stressful situation. You will now build on that kind of experience to create a short story; however, this story has a catch. As you develop your character(s), you will also need to apply your knowledge of the nervous and endocrine systems to annotate and explain what is happening within their bodies.
Write creatively. This story may have happened to you in real life, or you can create an entirely fictional piece. Before you begin writing, make a document with a two column chart. You will write your original story in the left column. You do not need to use any special language or terms from this topic in the left column. Simply tell the story of what happens to your character(s) as vividly and creatively as possible. Your story in the left column needs to have a minimum of ten sentences.
In the right column of your document, explain what is occurring within the bodies of your characters as they react to events around them. Use at least eight of the terms listed below to refer to the nervous and endocrine systems. Whenever you use a term in the right column, be sure to bold and underline the text. Also, clearly explain how the term relates to the content of your story.
endocrine
central nervous system
peripheral nervous system
sympathetic division
parasympathetic division
somatic nervous system
autonomic nervous system
interneurons
motor neurons
sensory neurons
pupils (of the eyes)
fight-or-flight response
epiphenepherine
adrenal glands
