Virginia's Impact On American Government

Man Reading NewspaperThe Virginia Declaration of Rights, the Virginia Statute of Religious Freedom, and the Constitution of Virginia were very influential documents during the founding of America's government. These documents helped shape the U.S. Constitution, including the Bill of Rights.

Pretend that you are a journalist during the time of the American Revolution. Apply everything you have learned about these documents to write a news article informing the citizens of their importance. Explain the influence of European philosophers on the Virginia Declaration of Rights, the Virginia Statute of Religious Freedom, and the Constitution of Virginia. Explain the Virginia government’s impact on the U.S. Constitution, including the Bill of Rights. Your article should be creative, informative, accurate, and well organized. It should also be free of spelling and grammatical errors, and should include excerpts from each of the government documents discussed.



The items that you will need to incorporate in your article include:
  • A headline that is descriptive of your article.
  • Explanations of European philosophers' influence on:
    • The Virginia Declaration of Rights,
    • The Virginia Statute of Religious Freedom, and
    • The Constitution of Virginia.
  • An explanation of the Virginia government’s impact on the U.S. Constitution, including the Bill of Rights.
  • A supporting graphic, representing Virginia or United States government.
