The Gettysburg Address was given on June 1, 1865. This speech was delivered over 150 years ago, yet points from it remain valid today. To celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Gettysburg Address, you have been asked to revise President Lincoln’s famous speech, to make it into your own version. In this assignment, create a modern translation of the Gettysburg Address. Highlight any key points that are valid in today’s society. While you create your own version of the speech, you will want to analyze the Gettysburg Address. Think about the following questions:
- How is the Gettysburg address structured so it focuses on the past, present, and future?
- What are the key points that Lincoln is trying to convey?
- What words are repeated? Why are these words repeated?
- How does Lincoln use a poetic effect to strengthen the Gettysburg Address?
Once you have read and analyzed the Gettysburg Address, you will create your own modernized version. Before you begin, access the Modern Address Rubric to make sure that you include all of the items required for full credit.
