Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address was a call to preserve the unity of the United States. Through the eyes of Abraham Lincoln, the Civil War was about saving the Union as a nation “of the people, by the people, and for the people.” Lincoln stressed the belief that “all men are created equal;” a belief that the United States was founded upon. Lincoln felt that a different version of the United States prevailed from the beginning of the Civil War.
