Can you imagine viewing a play in the majestic setting of the theater at Delphi? Greek theaters were built on a very large scale and could accommodate thousands of people. The Ancient Greeks took their entertainment seriously. There were three types of theater in Ancient Greece: comedy, satire, and tragedy. In this topic, you will investigate tragedy.

Within Ancient Greek theater, the characters experience crisis and conflict that they must confront while making difficult decisions.  These decisions ultimately play a critical role in their destiny.  As you explore the tragedy, you are exposed to the plight of the tragic hero, who will endure suffering and questioning throughout his or her journey to find the answers to his or her many questions.

Within this topic, you will explore the origins of Greek theater. By gaining an understanding of Greek theater, you will be able to focus on the critical elements of tragedy and the tragic hero. Just as the tragic hero has a flaw, which is the hero’s downfall, you also have flaws that will have to be dealt with during moments of weakness. During these moments of weakness your true character is revealed.
